“Mictlantecuhtli”

This artwork is part of a series of mythological entities and beings seen from a contemporary perspective and developing a Mexican-cyberpunk aesthetic of my own vision and how I imagine Mictlantecuhtli which means “Lord of Mictlan” in Aztec mythology. This god is associated with the dead, he is a deity in charge of watching over the 9 levels of the underworld that is why he wears a necklace of human eyes that represent each of the levels he watches over and is directly related to testing the souls that arrive to the underworld to cross it and reach the Mictlan, in this work there is another important element that are the xoloitzcuintles, they are dogs native to Mexico and in the Aztec culture it was believed that they accompanied the souls to travel the path to the Mictlan, they are guides to follow the path and cross obstacles.
