DEITIES SERIES
“Coyolxauhqui. ”
DEITIES / Mythological entities.
This work is part of a series of mythological entities and beings seen from a contemporary perspective and developing a Mexican-cyberpunk aesthetic of my own vision and how I imagine Coyolxauhqui, a Mexica deity, who represents the moon.
This deity is associated to the moon because of a myth where Coyolxauhqui, leader of the star gods, while trying to kill her mother, is cut to pieces by her brother Huitzilopochtli who decapitates her and sends her head to the sky.
From this is born the moon Coyolxauhqui, the sun Huitzilopochtli and the stars; the brothers defeated by Huitzilopochtli.
I can’t help but think that this deity is somehow related to Catholic representations of the Virgin Mary where she is standing on the moon, it is very coincidental that most gods are related to the sky as well as extraterrestrials.
