This piece is part of my series on mythological beings reimagined through a Mexican-cyberpunk lens.

Inugami is a spiritual entity from Japanese mythology, summoned through a ritual that merges the soul of a dog with a human body.

Its story brings to mind the idea of “walk-ins” — a concept found in spirituality and certain extraterrestrial theories: souls from other worlds that enter human bodies to guide or fulfil a mission.

It’s not demonic possession — it’s an energetic replacement, a fusion. And the Inugami, with its fierce loyalty and liminal energy straddling animal, spirit, and human, resonates on that same frequency.

What if these beings were actually consciousnesses from other dimensions, experiencing what it means to be human?
What we now call “legend” might simply have been another way to explain a misunderstood cosmic phenomenon.
