DEITIES SERIES
“ Nure Onna. ”
DEITIES / Mythological entities.
Mood / I have always believed that the entire cosmogony can be explained in some way through mythology, but the more I research, the more certain I am that many of these entities are visitors, guardians, or technologies of non-terrestrial origin.
This work is part of a series that reinterprets mythological beings from a contemporary cyberpunk perspective. This is how I imagine Nure Onna, a creature from Japanese folklore that emerges from the borders: half woman, half snake. Sometimes she appears on the riverbank with a child in her arms; other times, just her gaze is enough to stop you in your tracks.
But I don’t see her as a monster.
I imagine her as a living archive, a bio-intelligent defence system… A kind of hybrid biomechanical Naga, programmed to protect portals, information or timelines that we no longer remember. Her scaly body and hypnotic eyes could just be biomechanical layers. What if her half-human form is just a skin adapted to our perception?
Many cultures describe serpentine entities that live in water, bring knowledge, and appear when doors between planes open. What if they are neither gods nor beasts? What if they have always been here, watching, waiting?
Perhaps Nure Onna is just that: the ultimate firewall. The passage between the human and the no longer human.
