DEITIES SERIES
“ Oni. ”
DEITIES / Mythological entities.
Mood / I have always believed that the line between the sacred and the alien is not as clear as we were told. Every myth is a coded message. Every deity, an avatar from another dimension. And some beings… seem like guardians of portals that we do not yet understand.
This work is part of a series of mythological entities reinterpreted from a cyberpunk-mystical perspective. Here I imagined an Oni, a demon from Japanese folklore, not as a creature from the underworld, but as a dimensional enforcer, an entity programmed to punish imbalances in the physical-energetic plane.
Oni usually have red or blue skin, prominent horns, brutal strength… but they are also beings of wisdom in some stories. What if they are not demons as we believe, but biomechanical intelligences? What if they were guardians of the Earth’s energy lines? Something between archaic cyborgs and planetary defence systems?
Their glitchy appearance in this work, the codes on their skin, the energy pattern surrounding them, all suggest design rather than natural evolution. I can’t help but think that they are related to entities from other cultures, such as the Rakshasas of India or the djinns of the Islamic world. Powerful, ambiguous beings that punish or protect depending on the balance of the plane.
Demons, aliens, or defenders of an ancient order? I don’t know. But every time I depict one, I feel something activate in the electromagnetic field.
